Hi, I just recently started playing widelands and i got my friend to start as well but I can't figure out how to use the internet multiplayer. I go to host a game but my friend can not connect to me. and when ever i start up my lobby i get a message that says ***METASERVER: ERROR: The metaserver was unable to connect to your game. Most likely it is not connectable from the internet! Please take a look at http://wl.widelands.org/wiki/internetgaming for setting up your internet connection for hosting an online game! So, I go to the link and it is ccompletely unhelpful on explaining how im supposed to set up my internet for multiplayer. If anybody could explain to me how to do this I'd be extremely grateful!

P.S. I use Linux Mint 15...

Thanks in advance.

Well, feel free to improve it where you see fit :).

The problem is that you are (very likely) behind a router that connects you to the internet. That thing (fritz box or something of the sort) handles connections that you make to the internet and hands traffic back and forth. Now though, you want to host a game and that means that someone from the internet has to connect to your local machine - but from the internet, only the router is visible.

So what must happen is that you instruct your router to take connections on the port specified on the wikipage and forward them to your local machine at the same port - that is where Widelands is listening for connections. This feature is usually called port forwarding.

unfortunately the configuration is slightly different for each router - but you'll need to connect to the router first (likely by entering http://192.160.0.1 as the address in your browser) and you'll need the IP of your local machine (on the console type ifconfig eth0 or look it up in the network manager).

I have one question about that.

Can I connect to the game without changes at router? I understad that its needed with hosting the game but what about other multi-players?

Yes, only the host needs to screw around with his router, all the other players do not need to touch it. This is because as a connecting player you are initiating an outgoing connection - the same you do all the time when browsing the net. The router is clever enough to let the reply the server you connecting to through.
