In case this was lost, I for one would like to have the ability to start from any player position (1-8) within the game and not by editing files manually.

there are the tutorial campaigns in game - they explain nearly everything - well at least the most important points.

Edit: I just found a nice post on another page: http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Widelands

It wasn't lost, as it was a feature request face-wink.png -> http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1792180&group_id=40163&atid=427224

But well thanks for your post anyway - I remembered, that I wished such a feature as well and so allready the base work is done now. -> In current SVN you can change the position in single player games (multiplayer is not yet working)

either build it yourself, as mentioned on http://wl.widelands.org/wiki/BuildingWidelands/

or download a daily build from https://www.azagtoth.de/widelands-daily/

The disadvantage of the last possibility is, that the version might be slightly incompatible to the libraries installed on your system and that the version is sometimes behind the current one -> at the moment, there's 3667 but svn is 3668
