Since after build15, I've added some keyboard shortcuts that you may find useful. The first group is for dealing with the message window, and it's been in trunk for some while now:

N shows the message window, G goes to the location of the currently visible message, Delete deletes the current message (actually, archives it).

Now I've added another set of shortcuts for navigation that should be useful for finding your way on larger maps. There are 10 slots for remembered "landmarks". Use Ctrl+0 to Ctrl+9 to set them, and just 0 and 9 to jump to them. Furthermore, pressing the ',' (comma) key jumps back to the previous location, which can be particularly useful in combination with the 'G' key. The '.' (period) key jumps forward, i.e. it undoes the ',' key.

Also remember (this is a very old feature), the Home button centers your view back on your HQ.

Remember, except for the Home button, these features have only been introduced after build15.

Thanks for this! It IS very useful and now that I read about it, I remember that I've often been missing "something" without being able to tell exactly what. face-smile.png

BTW: Wasn't there an shortcut for the frame rate and mouse position?

I did not find this here (http://wl.widelands.org/wiki/GameHelpbasicInterface/) and can't remember it! (Think, it was F4 or F5 or F1 or ...)

Not any more. Those things are drawn in debug builds, and yes, it would probably make sense to allow such things to be displayed even in release builds via a shortcut, perhaps in the upper-right corner next to the game speed indication.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but the CTRL+(0-9) shortcuts don't seem to work for me in the most recent SVN build. Is it just me or were they removed from the game?

Hi MiroslavR, that sounds strange. I just tried with r6311, and I was able to set shortcuts with ctrl+1 and go to this by pressing 1. I am not sure whether that would affect anything, but I'm running Ubuntu. If you still have this problem, could you please post which operating system you are running and which version of Widelands?

Debian Wheezy and r6306. I'm not sure how that works, though. Do you move your pointer to a random place in the world, then press CTRL+1 and you can jump back to it by pressing 1?

Yes, that’s how it is suppose to work.

Yes, roughly. It basically remember where the view (what is shown on your screen) is in the world. As a quick example:

  1. Start a new game.

  2. Move the view to just north of your HQ (so that you can see it in the bottom of the screen).

  3. Press "ctrl+1" to store this location.

  4. Move the view far into the fog of war (darkness).

  5. Press "1" to go back to where you were in 2.

Personally, I usually set up 1=HQ to quickly get back home, then as I build additional warehouses give each of these a shortcut. It is also useful to place shortcuts near borders, especially if the enemy is agressive and you need to switch back and forth quickly. face-smile.png

edit: newlines made the list a bit more readable...

Same with r6311. @hjd: That's exactly what I did. Well, seeing as all other shortcuts work as they should, I assume there's a problem with registering the number keys.
