No one here with experience in blender to exchange the column with the widelands logo?

I remember an old thread where I think a 3D blender model of the widelands logo was discussed.

https://wl.widelands.org/forum/post/12435/

Using that it should be not too difficult. Maybe I could try to do it (even if I'm not experienced in blender), but unfortunately I didn't find the model of the logo in the media repo.

The files including the blend file can be found on OpenGameArt.org: https://opengameart.org/content/widelands-logo

Thanks fraang, I got the model. Maybe I find some time this week to try and create something acceptable.

Ok, here is a first attempt. @kaputtnik: Is that the way you had in mind?

Developmentn News

Of course this is not acceptable, the texture doesn't look good at this scale. But I wanted to ask if that's the way to go or if something completely different is favored. There are other things to discuss:

  • Another thing is that it is not natural to have colored letters coming out of a block of white marble. I could make them the same texture as the block.
  • I reduced the height of the block because I intended to create the impression that the worker currently works on the letters. But now it's much lower than the column in the original image.

Exactly face-smile.png

Maybe let the 'L' not completely carved out of the main block, to show it is not ready yet? Maybe you can add a little groove beside the horizontal part of the 'L', so it looks like this part is partly inside the block? Or make it look a bit raw?

  • Another thing is that it is not natural to have colored letters coming out of a block of white marble. I could make them the same texture as the block.

Is it possible to give the marble texture a polished look for the letters then? Maybe only polishing the 'W''?

Thats fine, imho.

Many thanks!

Ok, here is the next attempt.

Development News

Changes are:

  • The logo is made of marble like the block.
  • The logo is positioned a bit lower so the base of the L is not completely visible.
  • The W is brighter to give it a polished look.
  • I reduced the height of the rendered image to match it to the other ones. I don't know what's the target height, the currently used images are only 70..80 pixels in height. The ones found by kaputtnik (https://wl.widelands.org/forum/post/26761/) are 150 pixels in height (with few exceptions).

I tried to give the L a rough surface, but I'm not good enough at Blender to manage that. Besides that I don't think that roughness could be visible with that low resolution.

I like it face-smile.png

Can you make the 'L' also a bit brighter where it looks out of the base rock?

More important than the hight of the image is the width, imho. I am thinking of cellphone displays here. The width should not exceed 150px i think.

Now the 'L' and the 'W' have the same texture and are equal in brightness. That makes the logo more distinguishable from the base rock. Good point.

Ok. In the latest version I adjusted the camera a bit to get the model more centered. I also zoomed in a bit to reduce the border space. This image is 150x150 pixels.
