Sure, that's very easy to do. How's this?

I think the strings are still too loud when the flute is on. I'm listening to it on crappy laptop speakers on purpose, so the stereo mix doesn't help to put them in the background.

Right, so on your machine the two sound elements are fighting each other. The first thing I tried was making the strings quieter, and that put us right back to where we were around version 3 when you (rightly) suggested it needed some more complexity. So I slept on it.

The second thing I tried was changing the instruments to something other than strings; I thought any instrument that leaves the flute frequencies relatively clear should work. I tried various alternatives and my favourite using a choir instead. That sounds like this:-

Then I tried a third thing, which was going back to the strings but moving them up an octave, so they're occupying a different frequency space. It's very slightly "Sounds of the Seventies", but you might like it:-

Using different frequency ranges surely helps. I had rather been thinking volume and string arrangement though. You have 2 lead instruments playing at the same time in the same frequency range.

Listening to some classical music might help you understand what I'm getting at. Here's an example from Mendelssohn, where the strings and the flute alternate taking the lead:
