Hello everybody.

I am currently working on a button icon set for Widelands which is consistent in style and have finnished a rough prototype of some icons. I would like to know what you think about the general style of them and if we found a style we like best I would sit down and make a complete icon set for the buttons.

Here is a screenshot of the icons in-game:

Next try

The old icon set in-game

The new icons set in-game

Hi fraang,

you icons look nice so far. A direct comparison would be nice though :).

Nice icons. I support the wish for a direct lineup for comparison.

I'm not sure about the question mark. There are quite a few languages where this sign is not used or differently used (Greek, Spanish, Armenian, Persian). I would suggest circumventing that sign.

Hi, fraang!

To assist in comparing them, here is a clip of the originals (as seen in the game) along with fraang's candidates.

fraangs fraang's

..............originals originals

@ fraang: Maybe I have a faster connection, but I seriously doubt THAT. face-grin.png

At this point, I still favor the originals, even though the building on the original statistics button is no longer used in the game. They marry better to the over all "look and feel" of the game than the proposed ones in my estimation.

I agree with QCS regarding the question mark (even though we do use one on the original). I found fraang's depiction confusing because I could not readily identify it as a question mark.

What alternative image might we use to better convey the "Help" idea?

Regarding alternatives for "help": This is a tough question. The only more wide-spread solution other than various Questionmark icons seem to be a Lifering (like KDE does with the Help center).

I also prefer the old icons because the new ones are too modern.

  • The left button is not only for the options, but also to save and to quit, so the diskette makes sense.
  • The second button shows not only the statistics, but also a ware overview. The building is a Barbarian warehouse and when I played the last time, it had that very image.
  • The widelands map is not rhombic (it has no borders at all), and therefore I prefer the old, idyllic image.
  • The buildings' shape does not look good, I prefer the old ones because that is how they appear on the screen. But I like that the anchor for the new port building appears on that button.
  • Concerning the question mark, I also have no idea. I do not like the lifering because it does not really fit to the style of the game (it is too modern). Windows (and surely other software, too) uses question marks. Does anybody know what those question marks look like in other languages (Greek, Armenian, Arabic, ...)? Does anybody know if Greek/... people understand the meaning of the "normal" question mark? (Maybe it can be kept.)
  • I also prefer the old text sheets because they do look a bit more traditional and not as accurate as the new ones fraang proposed.

face-smile.png You are right, of course. My mind (when I use it) is on the future. face-smile-big.png I've been out of touch for a while. Thanks for the correction.

Why not use something generic like a crate as a symbol for storage? The UI is used for all tribes, so something neutral would be better, wouldn't it be?

What do you think about it?
