After some time thinking about it, I've found that this will be the best way to do it:

I want to expand our Wiki manual to a great database of knowlege. I want to put there lots of basic and advanced informations. From basic "how to play" and "what is the button doing" to advanced "what is the best strategy" and "what is the equation for trees growth".

At first I wanted to do it in form of book (single PDF and DOC file), but since the Widelands are developing really fast, the information would be outdated in a short time.

Then I've realized that we have Wiki! I am not sure if this idea can be written there in a simple way, but I hope I will not do it by myself.

But at first I want to ask all of you, what do you think about it? Maybe you have better idea how to place all of my knowledge about Widelands to share with others (you)?

And if you think that this is a good idea, who can write some articles (and check the info there) with me?

Edit:

I will have some more time since the half of January, next Year, so I want to share the time with Widelands project face-smile.png

I think it is good idea, I only think some information can be considered subjective f.e. playing style. So such subjective articles (wiki pages) should be identified as a someone's opinion

Yes, the wiki is the right place for something like this. And currently there is a lot of information already in there. For about one year i tried to get an overview about all wikipages and updated several wikipages. The result of the overview is stored in the sandbox. But the wiki has lack of some functionality, f.e. its not possible to see from which pages one wikipage is linked, or its currently not possible to archive an outdated/empty page.

And a wiki is a thing where everyone could contribute. So feel free to work on it face-smile.png

I don't want to mess everything up, so I am asking about it here. face-smile.png

My general idea is to add to every created (or modified) page some things:

  • link "next" and "previous" like in a books (it can be added at the end, when the main work is finished)
  • information about the time the article/page is created ("Build 18, dev 7650" or "Build 19", can be written in a shorten way: "B18 d7650" if you want face-wink.png )

About links: it is possible to get all pages with link to a specific one. But to do this, some more code is needed in Widelands server face-confused.png

Yes, thats exactly what i meant face-smile.png And it's not all to modify the website code, additionally the wikiarticle menu has to be redesigned to fit with the new functionality.

Everytime i want to spend more time on the website code, but somehow i couldn't find time to do so because i am involved to some bugs/enhancements of the game face-upset.png

Once I've tried to stand up my own "widelands server" (copy), but I've failed. While I will have some time to make it without any mistake, I will be able to code any functionality we want face-tongue.png ok... maybe not all, but lots of face-wink.png

Cleaning up the wiki and adding more info would certainly be welcome face-smile.png

Finally I've found some time to put my thought to the written form. https://wl.widelands.org/wiki/Game%20Manual/, bottom part of the page.

I've created my proposition of changes. Now it is pure text with no links and descritpion. I would stay with old "<link> descritpion of the link" style. The arrangement was considered with other manuals (analysing manuals of Settlers II and III, and other in my memory). Probably more links will be added too (f.e. I've forgotten about torunaments & wihacks which are "historical" and should stay somewhere face-smile.png ).

Now I am asking about your thoughts about this arrangement. Especially you, kaputtnik, because you broke through all wiki pages and you know more than me about wiki. face-wink.png Of course wiki pages will contain links to each other as it is now, for example page describing single player mode will contain link to tutorial & campaign mode; other example: basic strategy for beggining the game will link tutorial too ("if you don't know how to play Widelands, try our <tutorial>").

And yes, I remember that some of the pages will contain opinions, so there will be a note about it.

einstein13, make it face-smile.png

That's just how a wiki got to live: Just make it. If something goes very wrong it is possible to revert the changes every time. You may take a look into the Sandbox. Over there wl-zocker and i had tried to get an overview and sorting of all wikipages. Feel free to change it to your needs face-smile.png
